Roiling clouds and a storm warning did not deter nearly 100 visitors, volunteers, officials, and supporters from celebrating the opening of Newtown Parent Connection’s new and permanent headquarters at Fairfield Hills on July 25.

Officials including State Representatives Mitch Bolinsky, J.P. Sredzinski, and Dan Carter gathered alongside First Selectman Pat Llodra, Police Chief James Viadero, Director of Planning George Benson, Health District Director Donna Culbert, and a mix of local Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, and Fairfield Hills Authority members at the newly renovated duplex on Washington Square. Fairfield Hills duplex has new life with nonprofit

July 25, 2016 by NPC Leave a Comment

NEWTOWN — All the noise this summer at the town’s Fairfield Hills campus has been coming from the demolition of the 225,000-square-foot Canaan House – one of the huge abandoned red brick buildings left from the former state psychiatric hospital that Newtown took over a decade ago.

But on Monday night, Newtown VIPs and friends of a home-grown nonprofit assembled on a quiet corner of the town’s grounds to make some noise over the renovation of a charming 4,800-square-foot red brick duplex, which is just as important to Newtown’s long-term vision for its municipal campus.

“What we have here is an extraordinary outcome and a tremendous investment, not just for the town of Newtown,” said Pat Llodra, the town’s first selectman, speaking to supporters in the candle-lit living room of the renovated duplex. “The town is going to lease it to the Newtown Parent Connection for $1 a year for the next 10 years.” Read complete article >

There are countless reasons why a young person makes the decision to experiment with drugs or liquor. While a number may continue to occasionally indulge in a recreational puff or two of pot, and many others go on to drink socially through adulthood with no ill effect, those intoxicants have a decidedly different impact on others.

Some graduate to more potent drugs, self-medicating a masked mental or emotional issue, unsuccessfully chasing a greater kick, or keeping their always-looming withdrawal symptoms in check. Others turn to alcohol, or a combination of drugs and alcohol, to quell inner demons that keep them careening down their paths of self-destruction.

For those who have taken that path, Dorrie Carolan and the Newtown Parent Connection (NPC) are there with assistance to help transition addicts into effective in-patient treatment centers.

Founder & Executive Director

Dorrie Carolan, Newtown Parent Connection, Inc.Dorrie Carolan and her husband raised their four children in Newtown, CT. Starting the Parent Connection was never part of her plan. The issue of substance abuse became personal when her eldest son, Brian, became addicted and subsequently died at age 28 of a prescription drug overdose. Through the struggles caused by Brian's addiction, Dorrie became aware that this was an issue that affected many others in the community. She founded the Parent Connection in 1993 in an attempt to network with other concerned Newtown parents. It was the impetus behind many policy changes in town and within the schools.

Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors is a committed body of volunteers who support our mission to keep the youth of Newtown safe and substance free.
